Amazing Story especially if you can get it with the cd!

I am a kindergarten teacher and actually ordered this book through scholastic with the cd. I didn't have any idea what it would be like...just that my students have been interested in history. Since Presidents' Day is coming up, I thought it would be a nice book to have. I have to say that it was the SMARTEST book buying decision I have made in a VERY long time! Today alone we listened to the song (the actual story) on cd about 20 times! Even when it is not on, the kids are walking around all day singing the words! Amazing! I am truly impressed with this book. Since it is a new book, I keep it on my special book shelft...the kids beg to look at the book..and have to take turns! Any time you find a historical book children adore...its an amazing feeling. I have always loved history..so I enjoy finding things to help teach about our past.

The school is getting ready for an extravaganza! The children are getting ready behind the curtain, while parents and friends are seated in the audience anxiously awaiting an evening of fun. Two children in front of the curtain are putting up a sign that says "OUR ABE LINCOLN" as the piano player readies her music. "True Abe Lincoln was Praised for his honesty Praised for his honesty Praised for his honesty True Abe Lincoln was praised for his honesty Many good deeds ago." Jim Aylesworth cleverly wrote an abbreviated biography of Abraham Lincoln which can be sung to the old classic tune, "The Old Grey Mare." The original song, accompanied by the music and lyrics, is printed on the end pages. The song is simple (three chords) and lively. This book can make learning history though song a lot of fun! The illustrations are very appealing. Under the author's note in the back he gives more biographical information. If you would care to make Mary Todd Lincoln's Vanilla Almond Cake the recipe is on the back cover. Yum!

Our Abe Lincoln is a creative and imaginative look into the life of our 16th president. The author use one of Abe's campaign songs as a starting point for the picture book. The words of the song are set to the folk song The Old Grey Mare. Through the song, children are taken on a journey of Honest Abe's life. The illustrations in the book are vivid and bright. The book will make learning history and fun and enjoyable experience. Our children ages 4 and 5 loved this book and we read/sung it many times! Facts about Abe Lincoln will be in their heads for many years to come thanks to this book!

A tale adapted from an old campaign song.

A tale adapted from an old campaign song. A very basic review of the life of Abe Lincoln, our 16th President, done with basic words adapted from the rhythmic campaign song sung to the tune of `The Old Grey Mare'. The story is wonderfully enhanced by the art of Barbara McClintock. The story has repetitive verses that can reinforce the point/information on Lincoln for that page. The illustrations are of young children in a school play telling the same point/information as the words on the page. This book is good for anyone, but really a great read for anyone 5-9 (non readers, maybe 2nd graders to read to others. The illustrations of the school play allows for an opportunity to find things in the story. The repetitive sentences highlighting the story of Lincoln can be used to encourage participation of the single reader in memory of the information and/ or the gathering of others with built in parts for participation of all. In 2009, the bicentennial year of the birth of Lincoln, this is a book to share with young children in the month of his birth-February. This book is recommended.
