Seeing Stars

Otherspace, the exciting and satisfying conclusion to the Truesight Trilogy is a sensational wrap-up for a very inventive science fiction thriller for young adults. I was ambivalent about starting this third installment because although I loved the first book, book two didn't totally thrill me. Seer, book two, was a good story, it just didn't go in a direction that I enjoyed that much. However after just finishing Otherspace, I can see now how the second novel ties in for a perfect trilogy blending. This finale for me was the best book of the three. Combined, these three interwoven stories of the adventures of Jacob Manford, a boy born blind who in his early teens begins to see, are adventurous, certainly thought provoking, and creative. The concept of a planet colony of genetically engineered blind people brings many speculative ideas into the reader's mind as the pages turn, and one finds that the author continually directs the story around corners unexpected. From the onset we learn about the controlled and often brainwashed colony of Harmony, a community of people genetically engineered to be blind. Their philosophy for chosen blindness is that people without sight, cannot judge others by what they see. In the first book we are introduced to our young hero, Jacob, who soon starts to experience light and shadows and soon full vision, and how he must hide this frightening news from others in fear of banishment or extinction. Jumping on board a passing cargo ship, he escapes the wrath of Harmony's leaders to find new worlds where others of his kind may help him find his way. I won't get into the story behind Seer, book two, that is another story of Jacob's adventures with new friends that deserves a separate review in itself. Otherspace, the trilogy's end, finds Jacob having visions. He sees a child calling him, begging him to come find them. Jacob believes in this path he might finally find other Truesight Seers and may find a home for himself among others of his kind. He hopes he will learn who he really is, why he has the ability to now see, and why he also has surprisingly new special powers. This book has Jacob space hopping throughout the galaxies, meeting new friends and allies that join him traveling the stars. They band together to fight for him, and to hopefully lead him to his true destiny as prophet to the people of Teiresias, a wayward community of Seers hidden on a frozen wasteland planet in a different galaxy on the Otherside of the Universe. Along the way we meet again, characters from the first two books, and also quite a few new participants both friend and foe. Action scenes abound, mysteries unfold, friendships kindle, and a blend of good writing, fabulous character development, and the ability from the author to give the reader a satisfying conclusion, allowed me to feel personally that this finale was the best of the three and that it created one of my favorite teen series. This was just excellent, engagin

OTHERSPACE is the third and final title in the trilogy. You don't have to read the two books before it to understand this one, but it may help reduce any confusion if you check out TRUESIGHT and THE SEER first. In this story, Jacob travels across the galaxy to find the boy in his dreams. Throughout this book he learns more about his talents and who he is as a person. With unending twists and turns, OTHERSPACE is a highly enjoyable book. I would recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction, fantasy, or futuristic stories. Reviewed by: Elly
