Orville Klompmacher is a sad and lonely little boy. Left without parents after their fatal car accident when he was age two, he lives with his Aunt Hilda, who serves as his legal guardian. But Orville has a gift - a miraculous gift. He can fly! Aunt Hilda doesn't believe him when he tells her about this gift, and so she sends him to a psychologist named Dr. Landbound. She wants him to understand that he can't really fly and that it's just a dream. As he is in the office getting hypnotized he flies out the window. He then soars over the city streets and sees a crime in progress - a purse snatcher. He hovers down near the purse snatcher and then returns the purse to the old lady who was robbed of it. After being examined, observed, and kidnapped by his Aunt Hilda and by Dr. Landbound, Orville escapes and rescues a boy named Wilbur, who is in desperate need of a friend. The two boys fend for themselves and live in a tree house together, earning food money by doing yardwork and walking dogs along the Monterey coast, until they meet three retired military men who change their lives forever.
