If you want to know what radio could be, and get caught up in Lorenzo Milam's highly original vision, this book is indispensible. Lorenzo was a kind of pied piper of alternative radio in the early to mid 70s and I think he left an indelible mark on all who worked with him and new him. You may feel some of that if you read this book. I volunteered at KTAO for about a year--about 30 years ago--and I still find myself in awe of some of his ideas. If you are interested in working in corporate radio, don't read this book unless you want to have your assumptions challenged in very blunt and caustic terms.

The definitive guide of Radio Broadcasting, the way is SHOULD be. Explains why dead air if preferable to 'safe', bland 'McProgramming'. Learn what makes a Howard Stern a media genius and Rush Limburger a shill for the Republican Party. If your familiar with programming from the Pacifica Radio Network (KPFA, WBAI, et.al.), head North on Vacation so you can enjoy the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, or get up at 6am not because you have to but because that's when Howard signs on, this book should be on your 'must read' list.If you own a Michael Bolton CD or own a Rush Limbaugh tie, turn up the intercom muzak, return to your cubical and start an office pool about when Ben and J-Lo will tie the knot.

Lorenzo Milam's book reminds one of what could have been, if things had gone differently back in those days when every issue of Popular Science had a full measure of clip-out coupons for more information about your future career in radio. He uses passionate and language. He speaks from his own heart on a range of topics, mostly practical, but touching here and there on the farther out themes: broadcasting for extraterrestrials, pirate radio stations from hot air balloons, and my personal favorite chapter title, Rock Gardening in the Ukraine. Milam is way ahead of his time both in terms of philosophy and the actual lay-out of his book, which has simply fanastic pictures. On second thought, perhaps his time is gone by. Maybe it's too late for the common man to hope to use electronic media to express himself. The KRAB radio stations of the world give way relentlessly to the mass marketing operations of the archons reeling about their starry concentric orbits.
This book is about radio

This book is about radio, about loving radio, about getting it in your hands and making wonderful things happen that talk to people. It had a big impact on me, particularly Milam's summoning of the Great Aether God, which in part inspired my own quest to seek the Goddess of Home Entertainment.
