3.5 Stars - How Much More?

When opening the pages of Ophelea: There is More to Life Than Man, by Raphael T. Irie, I was not sure what to expect and as I read through the book, I was constantly surprised. Ophelea was born to Boue and Victor, on the urban Ivory Coast. Her parents' legacy was one of a forced marriage. At age fourteen, Boue's father sold her to Victor and with great reluctance and force she became his wife. The one vow that Boue made was that she would kill herself before a daughter of hers was sold at such a tender age to a man. But would she have a choice? When Ophelea was born, she was considered sickly and expected to die. Due to this the betrothal to her father's friend, Solo, that was made before her birth was considered cancelled. However, she lived and became one of the most sought after beauties in her village. By the time she was a young girl, her mother was convinced that her daughter would be educated and not sold into marriage. To ensure this, Ophelea was taken to Kanessan, a powerful medicine woman, whose spells were supposed to protect her, but would they? Solo and many others in the village were very interested in Ophelea and would do anything to have her. Ophelea, though, is convinced that, `there is more to life than man,' and she was not interested in being owned. The path she chose was filled with betrayal and upheaval but she was determined to survive, at any cost. Mr. Irie has written an intriguing novel that delves into voodoo, arranged marriages and female circumcision. Though, there were a few word usage issues, the novel was a fascinating, quick read. I recommend this to readers interested in mysterious tales. Angelia Menchan APOOO BookClub
