Book Overview

Living in a gray world of silhouette, Lord Taris Wellingham conceals his fading eyesight from society. He has long protected himself from any intimate relationships. Plain twenty-eight-year-old Beatrice-Maude Bassingstoke does not expect to attract any man, especially not one as good-looking as her remote traveling companion. Forced by a snowstorm to spend the night together, these two lonely people seek solace in each other's arms. The passion they...

Sweet Romance.

I thought this book was very sweet and romantic. The relationship between Taris Willingham and Beatrice Maude Bassingstoke was very passionate. They start out on stage coach that wrecks and end up alone in a barn in a snow storm. They end up spending an intimate night together. Taris is trying to hide the fact that he is going blind and Beatrice Maude is a widow coming to terms with her abusive husband. I enjoyed the unique problems they face trying to get together.

Amazing Book

Now this was a great book. I enjoyed the plot and the flow of this book. With only 288 pages the author Sophia James did an incredible job. I highly recommend this book.

Wow. Such a beautifully written love story.

When I first saw this book in the store and read the synopsis on the back, I said 'no way'. Blind hero, plain widowed heroine, stranded in a snowstorm? Oh so trite. Then I read the reviews here and decided to give it a chance. Thank you to the three reviewers before me who knew a good thing when they read it. Harlequin Historicals does at times put out some gems so I always check out the new books in case there's a Carla Kelly (auto-buy), Diane Gaston (auto-buy), Julia Justiss (almost auto-buy), Deborah Simmons (so-so lately but formerly a fave) and (oh,joy) I see a new Gayle Wilson historical is out in September. But Sophia James had never been on my list of favorite Harlequin authors. Now I see that that was an oversight. I've read Sophia James books before. This one is different. This one is so masterfully written she must have been inspired while writing it. It's short (as are most Harlequins) but manages to get everything developed beautifully with a heartwarming romance that appeals to a mature romance reader like me who finds many recent HRs to be just plain silly. If I had to criticize anything about the book it would be the title (kinda lame and unappealing) and the couple on the cover. What on earth are they wearing? It's 1826 England, for pete's sake. But the author has no say in this. Her contribution, the words inside, is what really counts.

a-one

a sleeper - first time I read one of her books and I so enjoyed it - it will be a keeper for me, for sure. Highly recommend it - and I am going to get the first one and next one! Dont' miss out on this author - she is one to look out for.

An unexpected gem

I have read books by Sophia James before and haven't found them to be out of the ordinary. But this book bucks the trend...and I love it. It tells the story of Taris Wellingham who is going blind and Beatrice-Maude Bassingstoke. They meet in a snow storm when their carriage breaks down. I don't want to give too much away but suffice to say, they have a passionate night together in a barn while they wait to be rescued. They think they'll return to their ordinary lives but neither of them can forget the other. They both have preconceived ideas and attitudes to overcome, not least Taris's concerns about his failing eye sight before they come together. I loved this book. It was tender, emotional and passionate - a fabulous story about relationships and a growing love.
