Just Madden being the natural Madden

John Madden remains one of best NFL coaches of all time, his winning percentage (0.759) is the highest of all coaches that qualify, higher even than that of the sainted Lombardi (0.738). His recent retirement as a football broadcaster for the NFL leaves a void of style and substance that will be difficult to fill. In this book Madden simply is Madden, talking about his life and experiences in and out of football. As you read the book, one thing is clear, namely that you should take Madden at his word, when he gives the reason for his retirement you should accept that that is the reason. He talks about retiring as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders at the height of his game but never having any desire to return. Unlike so many coaches and players that stay on beyond their point of usefulness, Madden understood when it was his time to leave. There is no great football or life wisdom to be found in this book, Madden is just a natural guy being natural, talking about his life and how he feels about things. He is already being missed and the NFL season has not even started yet.

One of those rare books I can read over and over.

John Madden takes you for a ride through Anytown, USA on his Madden-Cruiser. You feel right at home on his bus, playing poker with him and his buddies, heating up some sausage links, enjoying a few beers, and running into all kinds of people in all kinds of towns along the way. John Madden talks to you, not at you.
