Strap in for the longest saga yet

One Piece Volume 34 finishes off the spectacular Davy Back Fight from the previous volume - Luffy's tired, raw, and beaten half-to-death, but he's not about to lose any crew members to the Foxy Pirates. And just when he's finally won, a new threat emerges that puts the entire Straw Hat crew in serious jeopardy. And so it begins. If the Davy Back Fight was a pre-show warm-up, then this is the volume where readers are dropped into the Water 7 arc proper. Like the title suggests, this one's a long one - you won't see a resolution until One Piece, Vol. 45 (One Piece (Graphic Novels)). And unlike the books Viz has labeled under the 'East Blue' saga or the 'Baroque Works' saga, there are no mini arcs or smaller, digestible adventures here - it's one continuous 12+ volume roller coaster-of-a-ride that grows exponentially more epic and urgent as it progresses. You're going to kick yourself if you run out of coin to buy the books halfway through. A large part of what makes the Water 7 arc great is that for the first time, a happy ending means more than just punching out the big bad and his lieutenants. There is crew conflict coming all at once from multiple angles and even as the main villains slowly reveal themselves, you're never quite sure how the personal struggles will be resolved. Volume 34 also demonstrates once again how quickly Oda can switch gears and create a whole new environment - the Venice-based canals of Water 7, the steam punk technology of the sea train, and a whole new cast of eccentric characters in the Galley-La Shipwrights. This is a pretty dense read that is a welcome change of pace after the more one-note brawls of Skypiea. Recommended. One Piece is about to top itself again.
