This special One Minute Bible walks new believers through the early stages of spiritual development, giving them a solid base for further growth. 208 pages. Value-priced for personal evangelism.
The subtitle bills this slim book as a "90 day journey for new Christians." That probably sounds religious and boring. Open the cover, however, and that view may change. The layout is clean and graphic, with large, white borders. There are brief, pithy, thought-provoking quotes from everyone from Pascal to Elisabeth Elliot to Henri Nouwen. On the opposite page is a one paragraph punch, often ending with a question instead of an answer, that sounds like a pep talk from a coach. And that's the best way to view this book, as a locker room pep talk. Aimed at "New Christians" it will nevertheless floor old ones. Between these double, set-off quotes is a brief meditation, what used to be called a devotion, or quiet time reading, usually with a Scripture passage from the New International Version Bible. But if devotions, as a rule, are not both deep and dynamic, here's the exception. Books like this do tend to have a denominational bent-- how could they not? But rather than leave out topics devotional books usually skip, the author handles them lightly but deftly, not unlike a skilled ball handler in basketball. One that comes to mind is Holy Communion, or the Lord's Supper, or the Eucharist, as this sacrament is known in various communions. The author lets the Scripture speak for itself, and lets the reader draw their own conclusions. It's not often you find a book you can't put down on this subject, and less likely to find one for two dollars. But this is the real deal. If you wonder why the author would expend so much creative passion on a book that is practically free (and priced to give away), that will never be a best-seller (as it's given away free), join the huddle for an hour and a half (one minute a day for three months) and find out about a new kind of joy, a new kind of satisfaction, and a new way to get in shape. And it may give the author some shred of satisfaction to know that he's fired up this reviewer.
