Brilliant and moving

This book is a true masterpiece, riveting and moving, elegantly written, yet still somehow an easy read. It's the story of an average American family in the aftermath of the apocalyptic disintegration of the United States. The nature of the apocalypse is never really gone into, and it's quite beside the point. The main characters are Arthur, his wife Marilyn, and their children David and Christopher, who leave their hometown in the hopes of a better and safer life in the mountains. Along the way, supporting characters of every description, from a wise and far-seeing grandfather to a selfless band of wanderers to sociopathic and self-serving militia leaders, move the story forward to its bittersweet and surprising conclusion. The true story here is the resiliance of the human spirit even in a family of imperfect, flawed people and the bonds of love between its members that transcend hardship, sickness, and even death.

My favorite book of all time

This book is a gem, and it is truly tragic that it is no longer in print. A touching story of love, family, and the kindness of others in the face of immense danger, the title is how a young boy describes how much he loves his mother (the distance to China being the largest thing he can fathom). This book will touch your heart. Required reading for my high school English class years ago, it became my favorite book, and the title is engraved on the inside of my husband's wedding ring. I can give it no higher praise.

One Hundred Times to China is a story of love and survival.

Civilization is crumbling and Arthur's only wish is to take his family and escape to a cabin in the mountains far away. His story is the journey of getting there, but it is also the story of what remains with us even on the other side of death.
