Lois Read has written verses since high school, but her education and career were in the visual arts. She is a retired teacher of Art and History of Art at Hopkins School in New Haven. In the summer of 1978 she attended an Art School Program in Lacoste, a medieval hill town in the south of France, which is where she began to paint seriously and to write poetry as well. She returned to teach in the art school the next year, and again ten years later on a painting sabbatical, began journeying whenever she could, searching, listening, looking for common threads, for meaning. A small group of poems from this traveling period is included in this collection, under the heading "Wandering." Now Read finds meaning closer to home, finds herself "Wondering" about the meanings implicit in the everyday, as well as the implications for us today in the eternal messages in Fairy Tales, as in "Flights of Fancy."
