ANOTHER TRIUMPH FOR LAROCQUE

Another delightful, albeit small, book on language by Paula LaRocque. She is spot on with her observation that an oft reaction by people when they hear others, with inveterate ignorance, using such grating and incorrect constructions as "very unique" or "this is between you and I", is a compelling urge to publicly correct them. With some authors one wonders why they have written so much - with LaRocque one regrets she has not written more. Not only is her writing informative and entertaining, there is a certain charm about it. Ever puzzle over the correct uses of 'a', 'an', 'as', 'quotation marks', 'apostrophes', and 'commas'? After reading LaRocque's 'On Words - Insight Into How Our Words Work - And Don't' you will puzzle no more. Her chapter on Shakespeare's birthday is a gem as is the one on the word 'father'. Did you know that etymologically there is a nexus between the words 'father' and 'food'? There is. Reading this book is a veritable feast - movable or otherwise.
