Short, to the point and powerful. Highly recommend.
A Precious Gem...

This is a precious gem indeed --a small treatise on the traditional Jesus Prayer of the Orthodox Church Like everything the late Fr. Lev Gillet wrote, ''On the Invocation of the Name of Jesus'' bears witness to the wisdom, compassion and profound humility of the author. I can't recommend it highly enough. Wherever you are now, Fr. Lev, many many thanks!
A SMALL BUT PRECIOUS VOLUME
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
Lev Gillet, who has often written under the pen name of "A monk of the Eastern Church," has put together this small but informative volume on the Jesus Prayer. It is published under the aegis of the Anglo-Orthodox Fellowship of St. Albans and St. Sergius in the belief that the Jesus Prayer is part of the heritage of the West as well as of the Eastern Church. He instructs us succinctly on the nature of the prayer (preferring the single word Jesus to the more usual longer formula) and on the practice of this prayer to various degrees. He achieves necessary completeness without excessive detail and is nuanced and well balanced in his presentations. In chapters four to eleven he provides overtones, as it were, that might accompany the prayer giving it different flavors at different times, the one word embodying worship, salvation, incarnation, transfiguration, the church, Eucharist, the Spirit, or the Father. But in the end all these various overtones coalesce into a prayer of total presence, like various colors into the brilliance of pure light. The book is easily and quickly read, but provides material for much meditation.
