Obviously not science, but the origin of the Wishing Machine in WSB Western Lands

"Machines that sometimes work, for some people, and sometimes not at all." These are schematics of abstract "machines" or devices for making our wishes come true, our weather to be controlled, and our emotions to be quelled. Most notably this book influenced William S. Burroughs and gave rise to the Wishing Machine that appears in his novel The Western Lands. It's an interesting piece of rustic, idiosyncratic oddness, All-American and all-weird.
