I am an avid reader. I particularly enjoy historical fiction and specifically multi-generational family saga series. Nicolaysen's "New York" series of 5 is highly recommended. In each book, the characters are diverse and well developed, as are the plot lines. The historical context, particularly developing NYC is well considered and presented. A difficult series to find since is out-of-print, but well worth the treasure hunt. "On Maiden Lane" covers the time period 1682-1761. The following is from the mass market pb cover: "As the port city on Manhattan Island prospered, the de Kuyper dynasty rose to become merchant princes of a thriving new world. Under their English masters, they would build a commercial empire from Wall Street to Westchester. But over three generations, the wealth that gave them power and priviledge also gave them a resolute loyalty to the land that was their home. They would fight the English war against the French and Indians, but they would never bend to the unjust tyranny of the Crown. The de Kuypers were New Yorkers now, and their allegiance to the dawning glory of the American nation." "The de Kuyper dynasty turns Manhattan Island into a thriving merchant empire-and then must defend it against the tyranny of the Crown."
