Wildy imaginative

I love this story of a little boy who doesn't want to sleep and creates a wonderful world of adventure for himself. It's a beautifully illustrated and well told story.

Oh Oliver!!! Great Bed-Time Fun!

This cute book is a nice addition if you already own Mara Bergman's book "Snip Snap". If you don't own it, buy it first as it is one of the best children's' books ever written! This is a fun book about Oliver who doesn't go to sleep and instead explores the great outdoors and even travels through space until he realizes he missed home and "finally, finally, finally, finally" goes to sleep. It is a lovely bed time story and especially good for little boys which it feels a bit more directed at. Definitely a welcome addition to any bedtime collection.

LOVE THIS BOOK!

We checked this book out at the library and loved it so much, we wanted to buy it.

Our current favorite book!

We love this book, and read it at least once a day to our 26 month old daughter. In fact, I am ordering the author's other book today just based on how much I love this book! I would highly recommend it!

Oliver Who Would Not Sleep

Bergman, Mara. Oliver Who Would Not Sleep! Illustrated by Nick Maland. Scholastic Inc. 2007. This funny, rhyming story about a boy named "Oliver Donnington Rimington-Sneep (who) couldn't and didn't and would not sleep" features a bedtime scenario where the child is not afraid of going to sleep; he just wants to play. This new collaboration by the author and illustrator of, "Snip Snap!! What's That?" (Greenwillow Books, 2005) works well as a group read-aloud even though not all the pictures are full size. Verse, "So with a great big stretch and a great long yawn..." just begs to be acted out, and an accompanying illustration shows Oliver with his mouth wide open, tonsils revealed and his arms outspread. Whimsical pastel watercolors sporting multiple black lines convey a child friendly sensibility: Oliver pulls a lamb out of a magician's hat; he flies off in a rocket ship and takes his first steps on Mars. The fact that the fantastic creatures and rocket ship represented in this story resemble toys in Oliver's room is reminiscent of Sandol Stoddard's wonderful story, "Bedtime Mouse" (Houghton Mifflin, 1981). Enlarged font size alerts the reader when some emphasis of tone is recommended. Share with children, ages 2- 6.
