Outstanding book, with a wealth of information on Indian Traders of the 4 corners

You can tell the moment you open this book that the author went to great lengths to research first hand the subject matter. I have found this book to be not only THE BEST book on the subject but covers in great detail and interesting ways, the subject matter of Indian traders of the four corners. I avidly collect trade tokens of these Indian traders and found this book to be a great help to me, in piecing together the history of the traders, which is what drives my collecting...the history. The author includes many ancedotes, photos of the still existing posts, photos of the post ruins, dates of operation of each post, proprietor names, the lineage of each post as it passed from trader to trader, etc. I can't speak highly enough, and if there were ten stars available, I would rate the book as ten stars.

A seminal and informative work of original research

The trading post was where whites and Native Americans came together to exchange goods, hold meetings to discuss issues of mutual concern, and often served as the origin of what would become towns and cities. Some of them survive and are still operating today. "Old Trading Posts Of The Four Corners: A Guide To Early-Day Trading Posts Established On Or Around The Navajo, Hopi, And Ute Mountain Ute Reservations" by western historian Richard C. Berkholz is the history of these posts from their founding down to the present day. Included in this historical survey is descriptive information on their condition and directions to finding them (some of which are very difficult to locate). Most of those that continue to operate are no longer located in their original quarters or do business in the same way as they did in the 19th century. But there are a few that still occupy original buildings and visitors can get a flavor of what it was like in the Old West. A seminal and informative work of original research, "Old Trading Posts Of The Four Corners" is a welcome addition to personal, academic, and community library American History and Native American Studies reference collections, as well as supplemental reading lists for academia and non-specialist general readers alike..
