Nestling on the south-east coast of Co. Down, these small communities were in fact two of the most important fishing ports in Northern Ireland. By 1890 one third of the herring landed in the whole of Ireland passed through Kilkeel and by that time coal was being imported while exports of local industries - granite, oats and timber - were ever increasing.
