A smile and a springboard of inspiration is guaranteed

This is a fun book written by two witty thirty-something gals, WendyBurt and Erin Kindberg who appropriately have subtitled it "TheHip Chick's guide to Fun for One." I smiled when I saw the brightpink cover and snappy illustration, I smiled when I read the table ofcontents, and I just kept smiling as I read through it. Each of the125 chapters, that are less than two pages long, includes an idea thata single woman can do alone. All of them encourage creativity andinclude such diverse activities as volunteering in an animal shelter, skydiving, learning to brew home-made beer, taking a road trip in aconvertible, and even crashing a wedding reception. Each idea ispresented with humor, followed by a short list of places to go formore information, including appropriate websites. The book, of course, does more than just give ideas. It says something about the authorsthemselves. These are women who enjoy their lives and are always onthe lookout for something interesting to do. And even though theyoften humorously refer to the possibility of meeting some hunky guywhile learning to fly or going to a town meeting, this is somehow justa footnote to the idea of the activity itself. There's encouragementto take courses, learn a new skills, help the needy, and open youreyes to the pleasures of just plain living. It's upbeat all the way. Iread the book all the way through but it can also be read by justleafing though it or choosing a chapter at random. But however youread it, I can guarantee it will make you smile as well as act as aspringboard to further inspiration. Recommended.

One is Not the Lonelinest Number

As Lily Tomlin said, "We're all in this alone." Might as well find the glamour in our existential lots so buckle up for a glitzy tour of happy self-discovery as guided by authors Burt and Kindberg in their playful "Oh Solo Mia!The Hip Chick's Guide to Fun for One."There's something here for everyone: from playing Clara Barton by designing cards for the hospitalized to lascivious eye-balling the outfield as described in the chapter "Weiners and Balls." The witty exposition and helpful list of resources are consistent throughout this book of 125 terrific ideas for overcoming 'there's just me' self-pity.If you want a cheery gift for a newly divorced friend, or for someone overcoming a soured romance, this book will encourage the perspective that there is more than life after couplehood. It's time to celebrate the one relationship that will never abandon you and is most likely to bring you lasting happiness. You!

Funny book! Not just for single women

I had the wrong idea about this book when I first picked it up. I figured it was going to be something for single women. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually geared toward all women - single, married, divorced, gay, living with someone. It's really just about coming up with ways to have fun by yourself. Some of the ideas are silly (pull a panty raid on yourself to clean out your underwear drawer), some are more serious (volunteer for Habitat for Humanity building houses for people who need them), but all were funny. If you like biting sarcasm, this will fit your tastes. The book offers not only ideas for activities, but also witty comebacks for those "why-are-you-alone?" looks and good references to Web sites, 800#s, advice, etc. Even if you don't plan to do all these ideas (and who could in one lifetime?) get the book just to keep by your bed for a great read when you need to laugh out loud.

Single doesn't mean odd one out!

An encouraging and witty book that declares it's okay to be single. There are tons of ideas for one woman to do. The book has over 100 solid ideas for things to do, and these ideas stimulated me to think of others. No more sitting around moaning about being alone. Hope these two co-authors put out a few more books that are this helpful. My idea is to give it to my nieces as graduation gifts as they finish college.
