This book is so entrancing. It has literally haunted me for years. I actually made a painting about it, bought an extra copy of the book and used cut out words for Odette's hair. I wish they would make a movie about this book - it would challenge Gone With The Wind - and it has some issues that we still face today: gay, racial, and sociopolitical oppression. Some exerpts are exquisite: 'always look deep' 'just begun to live', it is a novel about a young woman standing against patriarchal relationships, grasping integrity, and making her own way in a time when women had no choices.
Romance
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
The story is written diary style from the eyes of a young woman sold by her father into an unhappy marriage. Although I read this book many years ago, I still remember the emotional impact it had on me at the time. I don't think I have ever had a reaction to a book as I had with this one. A masterpiece? No, but I still liked the book.
