This book is a great teaching tool! It starts talking about whole numbers, breaks them down into odd and even numbers and then uses photographs to exemplify what the authors are talking about. The even set of numbers is introduced with the numbers shown, then a definition that these can be grouped into pairs, with photos of 2 tulips, 4 kittens, 6 kids, and 8 eggs. The facing page shows the odd numbers with the same definition, but with 1 left over. The photos include 1 duck, 3 puppies, 5 eggs, 7 crayons, and 9 helmets. "Which numbers below are even numbers?" engages the readers and anyone reading the book with them. The four photographs shown below the question allow reader and book to interact with one another. This occurs on page 7 and on page 9 the same is asked of the odd numbers. Number lines, number placement, and simple addition are also introduced in the latter section of the book. The beauty of this teaching tool is located in the back cover of the book. The word count (286) is listed, as well as a learning center activity and a list of vocab words. This has lent itself to countless hours of learning and interaction with my students.
