All aboard for a fascinating history of ocean liners!

Passenger ships have sailed the earth for centuries, but the "era of the ocean liner properly [began] with the introduction of steam." In 1838 the first ocean liners crossed the ocean. The sailing ships began to vanish and the competition for bigger, better ocean liners began. By 1872 they became "plush" in an effort to attract the business of the more well heeled clientele. Naturally, the immigrant population heading to the United States, Canada, Australia or other destinations filled the less desirable portions of each vessel. Many of us can recall reading about or watching movies about the White Star Line's ill-fated voyage of the Titanic and the assortment of passengers she carried. This book briefly and concisely covers the history of ocean liners from their earliest days to the present. We even learn a bit about the history of deck chairs and steamer rugs! Any planes, trains, ships and automobiles youngster will love the text and pictures in this one. The history is very well done, concise enough for a report, yet fascinating enough to pore over. One of my favorite pictures was of the stern of the Star Princess. Whatever your interest from the Titanic and the Carpathia to the Carnival Cruise Lines, you'll find them . . . all aboard!
