As stated on the front cover: *A non-partisan, educational project for producing materials and programs responsive to the concerns of the American people regarding nuclear war.* This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is one of the best books available on general nuclear issues, if you don't mind that the Cold War is over and it's a quarter century out of date. Ground Zero covers proliferation, star wars, weapons systems, general history and of course, the effects of a nuclear war. Everything is explained at a basic level so the reader need not have any expertise in the subject beforehand. But the book is sufficiently comprehensive that the epilogue states the reader now knows as much about nuclear issues as any US president. I wonder, though, if the authors are really as non-partisan as they claim. I would bet they are far more afraid of war than of any foreign foe.
Very sobering look at nuclear weapons

I highly reconmend this book. It will provide you with some basic facts about nuclear weapons, their use, and their results. The chapter that lays out a few different fictional storylines leading up to the use of atomic weapons is frightening. Another chapter on the first nuclear war (between the US and Japan in 1945) is instructive: In history's only conflict fought with atomic weapons the nuclear power (in this case the United States) used every atomic bomb (2) in it's arsonal, giving lie to the notion that nuclear weapons can be used like any other weapon. This book will give you a lot to think about.
Everything you ever wanted to know about nuclear war....

I read this book nearly 20 years ago. It attempts to provided an objective description of he history of the cold war, and the development of the nuclear arsenals of NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The book contains lots of statistics from non-classified sources and has vidid descriptions on the potential effects of a nuclear confrontation between the superpowers. It's written in a easy-to-read style, targeting the everyday person. If read by someone today, it would seem most of the value of this book would be in gaining some insight into the concerns of Americans and Soviet citizens who lived through the dark days of the cold war 1950's to 1980's.
