Professor Thompson produced this book based on his visits to museums and libraries. He argued with side by side comparison on the signs and motifs of East Asia, especially China with that of Meso-America. His conclusion is that America and Asia association is strongly conclusive. He even included the Chinese ancient oracle bone character of “boat” on page 59. He mentioned a lot of yin/yang symbol frequently in the book. He mentioned on p.8 that statue of Buddha bears this motif as forehead emblem. It is more common for Buddha to bear the swastika motif than yin/yang (Taoism symbol). He mentioned that Huang-ti was the mythical founder of Taoism. Lao Tzu was well-known as the founder of Taoism in China.
On page 3, he mentioned Kuan –Ti as the ancestral patron of merchant. The legend of this patron dates from the pre-Shang era of mystical emperors ca.3000 years. Died in China 220 C E, he was regarded as the warrior God of Fortune for his bravery and justice. Kuan-ti served as a model for entrepreneurs who sailed along the shores of China. For boat sailors, their patron Goddess is Heaven Queen, Ma Tsu
The best part of the book is on Chapter 9 and 10 with comparable diagrams and pictures between East Asia and Meso-America. It is impressive research. Helpful is his bibliography and the list of sources on each chapter. Reader is able to follow the lead for further study and research. Written almost twenty years, this book is a basic lead as to who visited and impacted America cultures before Columbus.
