Another reader on the Tony Northrup bandwagon

I have nothing else to add to the other reviews. I have read dozens (honest!) of NT books. This one ranks as one of the best.

You can't get your money out fast enough for ths one!

I had occasion to go through portions of this book again recently and could not help but be amazed, again, at how complete and information packed it is. Not only does it cover everything you REALLY need to know about NT networking but Tony writes in a wonderfully easy style that makes digesting all the deep tidbits--and there are a lot of those--easy.The previous reviewer who said that this book is not long enough is right on. When you finish the book you will be amazed at what you did NOT know and want the author to keep telling you.We can only hope Tony revamps this book for Windows 2000. If you run NT networks this book is a must have. It is also an excellent companion to studying for many of the MCSE tests because you'll disocver how things REALLY work.

Excellent!

Without a doubt one of the best networking and NT-centric networking books I have read. Tony covers all the bases, with an emphasis on NT relevant areas, and uncovers a number of gothcha's in NT that can save you from losts of frustration. Even with Windows2000 this book will be useful as a great primer on Windows TCP/IP networking.

Defiintive Resource on Networking with NT

Being an NT amdinistrator for the Marine Corps, I needed a book that could cover all aspects of our network, from router interfaces, TCP/IP troubleshooting , DNS configurations and more. This book does that and more. With a constantly changing architecture and engineering of differnet networks on a consistent basis, I found a wealth of knowledge for troubleshooting and maintaining an NT NOS. Highly recommended, good read for interim to experienced level administrators.

NT Network Plumbing is dead accurate and full of details

Ever wonder how to use a packet sniffer? Ever wish you could figure out how to use the one that ships with NT? Mr. Northrup covers NT's Network Monitor in far more detail and with considerably more accuracy that Microsoft ever bothered with. But he goes far beyond telling you how to use this and many other poorly documented utilities included with NT Server, Workstation, and the Resource Kits; Mr. Northrup shows you when to use them for troubleshooting specific problems. Thats not all, far from it. The author explains the OSI and DOD models for networking and throughout his text explains where in each model whatever feature or issue he is describing falls. He also details how to implement and troubleshoot network protocols and services such as HTTP, FTP, DFS, DNS, WINS, and DHCP. And finally, someone tries to explain NetBIOS thoroughly and accurately. This book is deep, perhaps too deep for beginners. But for anyone responsible for designing, implementing, supporting, or troubleshooting NT as a network operating system this is a book that must be added toyour library. After all of that, you might be wondering who the heck is this guy anyway? I work for one of the most well respected consultant companies in the industry specializing in systems administration. I've been responsible for NT workstations and servers for over four years, most recently supporting the Internet servers for numerous fortune 1000 clients hosted in the datacenters of a world-wide telecommunications company. In other words, I know what I'm talking about when I tell you to "Buy this book!" END
