Johanna Lindsay is quoted, on the cover of this book, as saying that Tempest McLaren is an unforgettable heroine. I couldn't agree more! Born during a storm to a Native-American-Indian mother, and a Scottish father, Tempest is aptly named. Sadly her mother dies young, leaving her to be raised by her less-than-competent father. She grows up to be very beautiful, but as fierce as a wild animal. During her teens, her father sells her to a farmer for almost nothing. This starts a running theme throughout the book, of Tempest being abandoned by men, in some way or another. Luckily she's a fighter, with strong survival skills, and a sharp wit that one can't help but admire. Altogether there are three love-interests in her life. The first, is the farmer (a big, broad christian) who teaches her to trust him, and also teaches her about God. The second man, is a sexy entrepreneur, who tutors her in a different way...lets just say that the pages fairly sizzle. Yet he proves to be a disappointment in more ways than one. The third man is the best. He's a big, strong Swede. A man of honour and integrity, but with strong sex appeal - a true hero. Francine Rivers touches on some serious issues in this book, such as religion, racism, and politics. But ultimately, this is a story about unconditional love.
Another fabulous Francine Rivers book.

Very beautiful book. Romance with a high degree of realism. Mrs Rivers has always been able to potray human nature in all its nuances. This book was heading towards her Christian novels. She was feeling conflicted in her home and spiritual life and this book shows that conflict. She brings up issues of God and love and lust in new ways. The traditional bad boy hero is not treated the same way as in her past romances, or indeed in the romance novel genre. This is a thoughtful and complex romance novel, symbolic of Mrs Rivers transition into a Christian novelist.
Francine Rivers Best

This is the best Francine Rivers novel I have ever read. A story of the growth of the human spirit and learning to love, this novel is religious but not preachy like many of her later books.
