Book Overview

In this swoony and spooky teen summer romance graphic novel set on a Texas ranch, sixteen-year-old Cade Mu oz finds himself falling for the ranch owner's mysterious and handsome son, only to discover that he may be harboring a dangerous secret.

Cade has always loved to escape into the world of a good horror movie. After all, horror movies are scary--but to Cade, a closeted queer Latino teen growing up in rural Texas--real life can be way scarier.

When Cade is sent to spend the summer working as a ranch hand to help earn extra money for his family, he is horrified. Cade hates everything about the ranch, from the early mornings to the mountains of horse poop he has to clean up. The only silver lining is the company of the two teens who live there--in particular, the ruggedly handsome and enigmatic Henry.

But as unexpected sparks begin to fly between Cade and Henry, things get...complicated. Henry is reluctant to share the details of his mother's death, and Cade begins to wonder what else he might be hiding. Inspired by the gothic romance of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and perfect for fans of Heartstopper and Bloom comes a modern love story so romantic it's scary.

Love is love, but not all death is murder...

4.5* stars. All Cade wants to do this summer break is stay home and have scary movie marathons, too bad his folks have other plans. Life as a farmhand is hard work. Still, the farm owner's handsome son Henry helps to make Cade's stay better, and more interesting... when a short holiday break at the owner's family cabin happens, everything goes smoothly, and Henry and Cade grow closer through their mutual love of horror movies and natural chemistry. But soon, mysterious secrets start to pile up surrounding the hunky country boy, death seems to follow him, right to the very cabin they're staying in. Cade is familiar with secrets, growing up in rural Texas as a queer teen he has a major secret of his own. Can the two closeted teens find happiness, or will the questions - and bodies - pile too high for them to see each other? First off, the art style with the red-scaled and black coloring was perfect to set the scares and keep you on the edge of your seat as Cade learns more mysteries than answers. At its heart, this is most assuredly a romance, with a gothic/country style to make the suspense thrilling, but the characters learning how to comfortably be themselves, and their families - most of their family members - learning to understand them better, is the soul of this book. At some points, I wanted to reach into the book and slap one or two of the characters for the (homophobic) language they used or for gaslighting other characters. However, this book wouldn't have been so poignant, nor the beauty between Henry and Cade could have happened without that certain friction, really making this graphic novel well-rounded. All in all, this is definitely a book I would recommend. Anyone who likes mystery, boys being in love, and second chances, check this book out!
