In a slim 48 pages this children's book details the lives of America's sandhill cranes and whooping cranes. It's informative enough to satisfy an adult too and each page includes 1 or 2 color photos showing the cranes in many activities and areas. It compares sandhills and whoopers also.Besides giving the usual descriptive information and details of their diet (insects, berries, crabs, grain, etc.) and how they raise their young, the book includes concerns about the survival of the cranes. It's fascinating how the whoopers have returned from the brink of extinction, though they are still endangered. The development of wetlands needed for migration routes is a major concern. A worthwhile book for libraries, and suitable to introduce youngsters to conservation needs while still entertaining them with interesting details about the birds.
