Simple, charming and timeless

This, the first book I can remember being able to read, shows the value of older books for children. Not "lavishly illustrated," its simple colored-ink drawings support the story while letting the child reader imagine a real little girl or lamb. Nothing to worry contemporary sensibilities, nothing to bowdlerize or soften. The messages are clear: love animals, put care and thought into your gifts.
