You need a shot of Brandy

Brandy Alexander's back in South Philly and the town may never be the same. In this second book of the "No Such Thing" series, we find Brandy settling back into the old neighborhood and looking for a job. Her search is going nowhere so she takes in her old classmate Toodie Ventura, in exchange for some badly needed plumbing work and butler services. True, Toodie's just back from "an all expense paid vacation, courtesy of the Pennsylvania penal system," but he's a good guy ... isn't he? Well he seems to be, until a freezer full of body parts ruins Brandy's first blind date. Believe me, for her there really IS no such thing as a good blind date. Let me tell you about Brandy. She has the worst eating habits in the world and seems to live on chocolate and pizza. Her family and friends are the most lovably infuriating crowd in the world. She sings with a rock band in her brother's club. She has a cat named Rocky and a dog named .... oh wait, that would be a spoiler, better read it for yourself. She's ferociously protective of her friends. She spiked an attacker with the heel of her brand new Jimmy Choos. She's insanely crazy about two guys, one married and the other very dangerous (though very sexy); hence the blind dates, all of which go outrageously wrong. Author Shelly Fredman got off to a great start with the first Brandy Alexander book, NO SUCH THING AS A SECRET: A Brandy Alexander Mystery, and she's knocked this one right out of the park. This series falls a little outside the usual women detectives genre, since Brandy's brief as a crime investigator is entirely in her own mind. The writing is crisp, literate and funny, the characters positively crackle with life, the South Philly settings are vivid, and the plotting is tight. Brandy is a vulnerable heroine and the use of her first-person voice in the narrative is highly effective. I can't say enough good things about this book; this series in fact. I'll be reading the next one very soon, and then wheedling author Shelly Fredman to get more out there; I can't wait to see what Brandy gets up to next. I'm going to have a lot of fun with Brandy and I hope you'll join us. Five stars, for a smart, funny book that's pure entertainment. Linda Bulger, 2008

A WINNING NEW SERIES........................

If you're looking for a winning new series, look no further. Clearly not one to disappoint, Ms. Fredman has once again outdone herself. Our girl Brandy is back...she's returned to her hometown of Philadelphia, and has purchased the family home from her parents, who have relocated permanently to Florida. Currently unemployed, Brandy takes in childhood friend Toodie, whose plumbing skills more than make up for his checkered past..and present. When her roommate suddenly disappears and body parts turn up in a fridge in Brandy's basement, all facts points to Toodie's involvement in a murder. But Brandy refuses to believe that the bumbling Toodie is as evil as everyone is so quick to believe...and soon sets out to prove his innocence. With an entourage of scary folks following her (ex-cons and ex-boyfriend's wives), Brandy enlists the help of the one person that she considers even scarier..the delectable Nicholas Santiago. Can Brandy manage to stay alive to find the real killer? Or will the real killer find Brandy first? Or worse yet....will ex-boyfriend Bobby's wife be the one to throttle Brandy? Laughs abound in this fabulous sequel....readers will be thrilled to find that the author has lost none of her steam. DYB

Keep up the great work!

Shelly Fredman is a former Philadelphian, now living in Canoga Park, California. Her first AuthorHouse mystery is entitled NO SUCH THING AS A SECRET. Fredman is a junior high teacher, as well as a mystery writer, and is building a reputation with her Brandy Alexander character. Brandy Alexander returns as the hapless detective in the newest installment of Fredman's NO SUCH THING series. Brandy has left her vacuous job as a fluff television reporter in California to return to her roots, buying her ancestral home and trying not to pine for her former love, Bobby DiCarlo, the cop. When her old friend and recent parolee, Toodie Ventura, moves in with her in exchange for plumbing duties, a refrigerator appears in the basement with a dismembered body. Toodie exits stage left, and it is up to Brandy to step up. Suddenly Brandy finds herself trying to prove Toodie's innocence, even as she is stalked by Bobby's crazy wife, Marie. Brandy can't even go on a blind date without getting herself into trouble, and life seems dire until the re-emergence of the fascinating Nick Santiago: "'Don't worry, angel. I took care of it for you.' WHEW. 'I told him you were my woman.' OH MY GOD! This man is so unabashedly sexy he could recite names out of the Kama Sutra. Hearing him call me his 'woman' nearly sent me into orgasmic overdrive." Fredman expands Brandy's collection of entertaining, exotic, and eccentric friends in this installment of the Brandy Alexander series, even as she ratchets up the action. Brandy is ever-independent, which invariably gets her into situations where she needs rescuing. But in the end, Brandy shows herself to be resourceful, heroic, and yes...a little on the angelic side. NO SUCH THING AS A GOOD BLIND DATE is a rip-roaring good time. This reviewer can't wait for the next installment of this most excellently written and plotted tale. The reader can't go wrong on this series, and just Fredman's descriptions of Brandy's men begs a website with pictures so that we can all swoon. Brandy is great fun. Keep up the great work! Back With a Vengeance

For all of you Janet Evanovich readers who've been wondering, what happened to the "edge" in Janet's novels, check out Shelly Fredman's sassy sleuth, Brandy Alexander, in her can't-put-it-down sequel to No Such Thing As a Secret. The edge is back!

A wonderful sequel

In No Such Thing as a Good Blind Date Ms. Fredman continues with the life and trials of investigative reporter Brandy Alexander as she moves back to her hometown of Philadelphia. We follow Brandy through the perils of being a homeowner, a good friend, struggling with her feeling for the men in her life, and investigating yet another murder. The humor is wonderful! I highly recommend this book to everyone.
