No Popery!: Anti-Papal Prejudice is a fascinating historical survey with informative chapters devoted to "Bad Popes"; "The Campaign Against Pius IX"; "Some Other Modern Slanders and Slanderers"; "The Pope Who was a Freemason"; Why Pope Clement XII Condemned Freemasonry"; "On Some Medieval Fables"; "Hildebrand and Matilda of Tuscany"; "Papal Forgeries"; "The Forgeries of Cardinal Vaughan"; "The Popes and the Bible"; "The Extermination of Heretics"; "Groveling to the Pope"; "Papal Rapacity and the Ecclesia Anglicana"; "The Popes in Protestant Tradition"; "Darkening the Shadows"; and "What Prejudice Ignores". No Popery! is fascinating, informative, and thoughtful reading which is strongly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history and development of the Roman Catholic Papacy.

A classic book of Apologetics!

Fr. Herbert Thurston was a respected historian who used his expertise to refute the common anti-Catholic, and especially anti-papal, lies of his day. Can you refute these anti-Catholic slanders? "Until the Reformation, the Catholic Church systematically kept the Bible out of the hands of ordinary people." "Papal primacy was a medieval invention buttressed by forgeries." "Catholicism places higher importance on empty ritual and rote repetition than on true acts of Christian virtue." "Medieval monasteries and convents were rife with immorality and material corruption." "Torture, or the threat of it, was once commonly used by the Church to enforce adherence to its doctrines and disciplines." "The scandalous immorality of many popes disproves Catholic claims of papal authority, especially infallibility" "The Church used Latin translations of Scripture to keep ordinary people ignorant of it." "The popes condoned assassination of Protestant leaders, and the murder of Protestant populations, during the Reformation." "The Church was reformed in the 16th century not from within, but under pressure from Reformers like Luther and Calvin." "Catholic missionaries were agents of conquest, not the Gospel." These nonsensical attacks have been used against the Catholic Church for centuries. They are untrue, but can you refute them? You'll be able to refute them if you read this book. Common myths and misconceptions about the medieval Church ... false (or true but exaggerated) allegations of papal corruption and misdeeds ... the Church's supposed "suppression" of the Bible and "persecution" of dissidents -- all these canards and more are dealt with thoroughly and honestly in Fr. Thurston's rebuttals. Don't let them get away with these whoppers! Have you unwittingly bought some of the mythology? Don't be surprised if so -- you'd have plenty of company, writes Fr. Thurston. Even loyal Catholics, in their efforts to distinguish the Mystical Body from its sinful members, concede far too much to anti-Catholics on subjects like alleged papal corruption. Whatever truth there is to these charges, many are false or exaggerated -- as Fr. Thurston proves by tracing them back to their sources. He exposes the shabby tactics and methods of leading anti-Catholics of his time, and refutes their claims -- often with the work of other, responsible Protestant scholars. Certain notable slanders (e.g., of particular popes) are treated in-depth as case studies to teach you how to evaluate any charge against the Church. No wonder Catholic reviewers in 1930 hailed Thurston's book as a godsend, and dreaded his departure from the field of battle: "Indispensable. One looks forward with dismay to the day when there will no longer be a Father Thurston to elaborate so patiently, so critically, so convincingly the scientific verdict of history upon popular anti-Catholic calumnies. ... Fr. Thurston points out that even where injurious charges have been freely made, we are not saf
