Must-read

People need to read this book. It raises awareness about things that should be looked out for when a child is being abused. Too many people are afraid to report or, according to their traditional views, think that it is taboo to remove a child from his family and that the family has the right to "discipline". What is amazing about this situation is that it was obvious that A.J.'s stepmother had long crossed the line of discipline, yet nobody intervened. His biological parents turned a blind eye, followed by neighbors and those at his school. Perhaps they would have thought differently had they known that their ignorance would result in his death.

Poor AJ...

This book was a very hard read-It was not boring at all, but it is hard to trudge through 200+ pages of child abuse, and wanting nothing more than to throttle JEssica Schwarz. I cann't believe all that she put that little boy through, especially after what he had to go through at the hands of his birth mother's boyfriends! Every time I read of a new episode, my heart ached more and more. And the father did nothing to protect him-and did not bother to attend his little boy's funeral. This book really shows the need for a fix in how we handle child abuse reports. Had Florida handeled them properly, AJ would be healthy and thriving right now...

will tear your heart out

This book is so sad, I ache for the boy who suffered so much. Abuse at the hands of his natural mother, a stripper, drug addict and well, slut. Severe abuse at the hands of his stepmother who treated him worse than anyone would treat a dog. He got no love. He got no health care, look at the photo on the cover. His front teeth were so decayed he smiled with his mouth closed. And then, he was found naked, dead, floating in the small above ground pool in his backyard, covered with bruises, cuts and lacerations. According to the neighbors this poor ten year old child was abused regularly and even though it was reported to family services he was allowed to stay with the stepmother from hell and the stupid father who permitted it. Anyone familiar with the Harry Potter stories would think J.K. Rowling got her inspiration from A.J. He didn't sleep in "the cupboard under the stairs", but he slept in a closet sized barren room with no toys, no books, nothing but a small bed and a few sticks of furniture. His bedroom door had a lock on the outside and in place of a doorknob was a knotted rag through the hole. Yet, his stepsister and half-sister enjoyed cheery bedrooms filled with toys, Nintendos, stereos and anything else they desired. The stepmother. God, I wish I had a couple of minutes alone with her. This bitch made the child's life pure hell, and then she murdered him. Oh, how this book makes you cry. Thanks to capable law enforcement, the monster is in prison for a VERY long time, and if she gets out....Nevermind, it's a good book but have a box of tissues handy. God bless A.J. I know He has.

A.J. Schwarz is finally safe

I am an avid reader and never have I read a book that I had to keep putting down because of my tears and frustration. I have yet to finish this book. I have to stop reading at points in the book where the horrifying tragedy that occurred to this poor child becomes to much. Jessica Schwartz deserves nothing but hell for what she did to A.J. I am horrified that the Agency set up to protect children from these kinds of acts is the main source of failure in A.J.'s short life. As I have not finished reading this book that would usually take me an average of 2 days to read and has now been over 2 weeks I cannot determine what I think of Jessica's punishment but if it was anything less than death, the system failed A.J. once again. I know I will never forget him and I never got the pleasure to meet him. God Bless You A.J.

True to Life Portrayal of an Abused Child

I have worked in the child abuse field for over 15 years. I am from the area in which AJ was killed. I cannot tell you how true to form this book actually is. It tells the real story of a child who is abused yet overlooked in todays society. It makes many of us face the reality that we often find to hard to face. If only people could truly recognize that there are many children out there everyday that are enduring this same abuse and often worse. While sometimes graphic and difficult, this type of book is needed to alert people to the problems facing our children today. This goes beyond discipline, crossing the line. Something that most people, who do not abuse their children, rarely believes exists. My congratulations to the authors who had the courage to embark on such a tough project. Excellent!
