An aquired taste

My three year old sat through the entire book with a blank expression on her face, but my four and a half year old cracked a smile a few times during the first reading. When it was over, he asked to read it again, and he started to get into it a little more. I think he may be a little bit young to really understand the humor, but he still giggles a bit. The illustrations are adorable - even if your child doesn't break down giggling, you both should enjoy the drawings. I'm confident that in time both of my children will get a good giggle out of this book and I'm glad I bought it.

a really funny book (a review by Eli age 7)

This is a really funny book. The tow main characters are Freddy Fafnaffer (the nice one) and Mr. Frimdimpny (who is in charge of this book). I like Freddy Fafnaffer the most because he is very funny. the book has a few funny stories in it. My favorites are "a nice nap" and "The best dressed man". I like the cartooning illustrations. This is a great book.

A LAUGH PROVOKING STORY

Popular New Yorker cartoonist James Stevenson has written and illustrated umpteen children's books, all of which elicit smiles from delighted young readers. This one will bring forth laughter. It's fashioned with mirth and merriment in mind plus the wonderful Stevenson illustrations. Youngsters first meet a friendly pig, Freddy Farnaffer, who describes himself as "the nice one." The other person, as Freddy is quick to point out, is not nice at all. He's grumpy Mr. Frimdimpny, a crocodile who has declared himself to be lord and master of this book. He's going to tell us exactly how to read it. There are many rules, and if we disobey we must go all the way back to the front of the book. How in the world can Freddy manage such restrictions? Well, as it turns out Mr. Frimdimpny has a secret. For him it's a very embarrassing secret (he giggles if anyone tickles his tail). One of the hard and fast rules is that there's to be absolutely no smiling. A smile is one thing, but just imagine what might happen if Mr. Frimdimpny were to actually giggle. Impossible, you say? James Stevenson is full of surprises. - Gail Cooke
