Book Overview

An uproarious and lacerating meditation on life--and death--by celebrated comedian and actor Denis Leary.

Based on the writer-performer's hit Off-Broadway show, this rapid-fire monologue sends up society and its ills--disease, drugs, crime, junk culture, the recovery movement, pious political correctness, urban life, and above all, our fear of mortality--with wicked satire and insight.

"High-octane comedy . . . terribly, angrily funny."--The...

If you've seen the stand-up special of the same name, don't bother.

The book is fine, but if you've seen the special, then the vast majority of this book is just reading a transcription. There's a little more here, but not enough to really advise it worth your time.

loved it

I purchased Denis Leary's "No Cure for Cancer" as a gift for my son and couldn't resist reading a little before wrapping...it is just hysterical! He is witty, sarcastic, and spot on with his humor. If you like Denis Leary, you will love this book.

Even more than the special and CD

This book is pretty much the script from the stand-up special for Leary's 1992 No Cure For Cancer show. It has more though, it doesn't have as many curses and goves even more in depth to Leary's ideals about drugs and all that stuff we know and love. It's as and possibly even more brilliant as the special, as Leary makes even more keen observations. For instance, the reason Irish people drink so much? The Irish music is always sad. Great.

This book had me in tears I was laughing so hard.

This is without a doubt one of the funniest books I have ever read. It is Denis Leary's stand-up routine put into book form. I used to commute from New Jersey into Manhattan and you should have seen the stares I was getting from fellow commuters because I was laughing out loud while I was reading it. Leary's cynical view on drugs, drinking, rock and roll bands and life in general is a roller coaster ride of laughs. Buy this book and you will laugh loud and often.

A verbal in-your-face-volcano

I have more than two words for you: Buy this book now and finally understand why you smoke, drink and do whatever you should not be doing (duh!).

Brilliant!

This comedy album is unlike anything I had ever heard before. It's full of nervous energy and fire and spritz and lightning and it zings all over numerous well-deserving topics. Much as I liked the comedy routines, however, I was absolutely delighted with the songs, in particular "Traditional Irish Folk Song," which still makes me laugh every time I hear it. If you're of Irish descent or if you've ever spent an evening in an Irish pub, then you will love this song.
