Loved it!

If not exactly a classic bodice ripper, pretty darn close, and in this age of very PC writing that at times borders on the bland, I must confess I just loved this book. No, it is not for everyone and has its share of flaws, but it's escapist reading and for me that's what makes for an entertaining novel. Why not five stars? I agree with one reviewer's point that the author doesn't give us enough "warm-fuzzy" time with the lead characters considering all the angst that they lived through. But I'm definitely going to read more by this author.

One of my favorites!

This is the first book by Meagan McKinney that I have read and I absolutely loved it. In fact I am reading it for the 3rd time now. I have to disagree with the comments in previous reviews that Brienne is too weak and that the book is offensive. One has to remember that this story took place in 1780. Women didnt have the voice that we do today. I think Avenel is one of the most interesting and attractive characters I have come across in a long time. Yes, he is very dominating but in a way it adds to his charm. I think this story was well written and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good romance novel!

Another good one

I have read all of Meagan McKinney's historical romances and I have enjoyed them all, including this one. She is one of my favorite authors. In response to the review by "Offensive to the Extreme", I think it was a bit harsh. All of Meagan's men are dominating on the outside because they have dark pasts that make them vulnerable on the inside. In the long run, the female character brings out the good in them, although she must endure a little cruelity to do it. If you don't like male dominance then you may not like her books. But, I think most of us read romance for the fantasy not the reality. I would highly recommend all of her historical novels.

Heart-Rendering

I don't usually write a review on books that already have several, but this time I felt compelled to, due to the negative comments that this gem could be miissed out on by many that would enjoy it. It has plenty of spark and fire to the contrary of what another reviewer wrote. I thought the reasoning behind the plot was unique and very feasible. Granted it's not for the reader who does not like the dominant male. Avenel Salne is all of that and so much more. He doesn't steal an heirloom when it belongs to him. He only forces Brienne to stay in order to protect her, although naturally he doesn't tell her that.He is a very troubled man with dark brooding within who needs love to soothe injustices against him and his family and of course, he is fighting against this intrusion on his familiar and safe ground-revenge.Brienne is adorable as she tries to stand up against him and escape his brooding hate. She is strong but not spoiled nor is she a shrewd about it. I loved her.I realize this book isn't for everybody but it certainly is for us who love that tormented hero who is forced to give up his demons in the name of love. There is no more of a moving story than to see that hardnose hero transformed into the loving human being he is meant to be once he conquers the demons plaguing him. These heroes love so fiercely and so protectively. You can rejoice with them and their ladylove once they are free and safe within the cocoon that loves provides. I hated for it to end.Lie Down in Roses by Shannon Drake was another good one on this line along with Rosehaven by Catherine Coulter and My Lord Conqueror by Samantha James. Some don't like these, but some of us do. So please keep in mind that there is a place for all books, for there are numerous readers out there with just as many likes and dislikes. And the one you hated, someone else loved and the one you loved, someone else hated. That's why we have numberous authors.

I couldn't put it down

I loved this book, in fact I love all Meagan McKinney novels. This is a MUST READ for those of you who love historical romance.
