I read this interesting book of poems as a young child and I've never forgotten it. As my introduction to reading poetry for pleasure, Nightmares was a delight and I still remember some verses probably 15 years later. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone.
CLASSIC!

I basically grew up on this and "Headless Horseman Rides Tonight". This is something that you can appreciate whether you're a child or an adult, especially if you're like me and you checked it out of the school library religiously. There was a review that said it was "unsuitable for children", ummmm yeah sure. As someone who was reading this book at the age of eight years old I can say that it helped expand my imagination and got me really interested in literature. One day I hope my little nephew will read this book and experience the same joy I did when I was little.
Very spooky

I used to check this little book out from my library practically every week back in the early 1980's. As a kid I was always fascinated by horror and monsters, and this book was a natural companion. Very well written and full of beautiful illustrations, I am not surprised that it is still in print. As for the one reviewer who claims that children should not be exposed to this material, I beg to differ. Children are always fascinated by the strange and unusual, especially scary monsters. The verses in this book were very tasteful, not graphic or "disgusting" at all. Besides, even as a kid, I knew that the monsters in this book paled to the human monsters that still lurk in the world today...and who commit their crimes with government and "moral" sanctions.
I must have read it at the age of seven or eight. I can still remember choosing the the slim volume off the shelf, and the gleaming skull cradling the bouquet of wilted roses, grinning at me from the cover. I recall vividly the "Will O'The Wisp"(what was it?), the Goblin (perched on the monkey bars, salivating over the prospect of a banquet soon to come), and the Werewolf (prowling the cobbled streets, and knowing EXACTLY where I was). I fell in love with these poems, and I "relished the picters" (Lovecraft). My mother hated them, with a passion, and that is probably why I was so quick to pursue the sequel: "The Headless Horseman Rides Again". I have not read the verses or seen the illustrations for years, yet I remember them clearly, and a mere four nights ago, I dreamed of standing alone on a desolate, rain-slicked street, purchasing roses for my sweetheart......from the Reaper.Thank You. --C.
