"Night Games " a Hitter

This was the first Kate Henry mystery I've read. I was hooked from the first paragraph, in which Gordon describes "Juicy Lucy",who is later murdered.I read the book in one sitting. Toronto baseball sportswriter Kate Henry is in Florida covering the Toronto Titans at spring training when a local sportswriter, known more for her loose ways with players than her reporting, is murdered. A rookie member of the Titans from the Dominican Republic is charged with the murder, quickly ending the investigation into Lucy's death. Avilo's teammates feel was framed,that his arrest was too convienent, and so Kate starts snooping around. The editor of the local paper, Cal Jagger, also believes the police evidence against Avila is too circumstantial,that the police really don't care if they have the right person, and, frankly, the public doesn't either. "Juicy Lucy", as the players called her, was "trashy", but why would someone kill her ? Kate and Cal join forces to see with Avila's lawyer's assistant to see what they can learn about Lucy's killer. Kate also bounces her theories off her live-in mate,homocide chief Andy Munro. Alison Gordon's narrative style reminds me of Sue Grafton. Like Grafton's Kinsey, Kate Henry is witty, somewhat sarcastic,with humorous observations, and totally likeable. In real life, Alison Gordon was a sportwriter and journalist who covered the Toronto Blue Jays.She is also married to a criminal lawyer.So, though I was skeptical that anyone could write a good mystery with a baseball writer, of all things, as the main character, Gordon proved me wrong."Night Games"was well written, travelled at a nice pace, and I didn't find out the killer until the end. This is a series I will read again.
