Sworn to protect Eleanor of Aquitaine's sacred jewels, Alyse Mirbeau must make a decision when Raimond de Bauzan comes to claim her and the jewels as his payment for his service to the Queen--either tell Raimond where the gems are hidden and surrender to desire or keep her secret forever. Original.
The author's mature approach to this very interesting historical tale is very skillful and realistic. The characters are appealing without being wildly idealized, as some romance authors insist on doing. The 12th Century English history is blended into the story without a heavy hand, and the characters don't overreact to everything in the exaggerated fashion that some romances have adopted as the style. I recommend this novel and I'll be hunting down the author's other work. I have to agree with the other reviewer about the cover; it does the book no favors.
Don't judge this book by its cover!

NIGHT FIRES is a wonderful medieval romance, despite its inaccurate, uninspired cover. Intrigued by the late 12c setting and the "hidden treasure" plot, I bought this book soon after it came out last year and absolutely tore through it! Linda Cook's debut is full of atmosphere and high emotion--a wonderful love story peopled with strong characters and lush period detail. I loved it! (And I was thrilled to see that her second novel got much better cover treatment.) If you like medieval romances, you're going to love NIGHT FIRES.
