What you always wanted ton know, but were afraid to ask.

I've been playing with computers since the TRS-80, some of my friends say I'm a Guru. I bought this book for a college class thinking "I'll probably never even open it." Open it I did and learned many details I thought I knew but didn't understand. The why's, when's, and where's that now make networks more understandable. The information in this volume is a little behind, but with the speed of technological advances it could have been printed this morning and I could still say that in all honesty. If you have never dealt with a network (internet excluded)or want to know what is happening when you open a file on a network, this is the book for you. Also, the spiral binding is great if you don't have much room on your desk as you can fold the book over and it takes up half the space. All textbooks should be like this!
Solid

I had the good fortune of having Mark teach an introductory course on computer networking using this book as a text. The class, as well as the book, was excellent. Mark is a skilled instructor, and a very gifted author. The book is loaded with easy to follow illustrations and information. I have read several networking books, but none was quite as easy to understand as this one. This book would be especially helpful for someone with no networking background looking for a solid foundation.
Good basic introductory primer.

This is a good, brief (204 pages) introductory book on networking for someone who knows little or nothing about computer networks. The book covers most, if not all, of the major topics required to get a good understanding of the "networking game". The book comes with some good diagrams and some good metaphors/analogies for those concepts that are more abstract and difficult to understand. What is missing from the book is references to other sources of information which, as an instructor, I would appreciate having.
