Good basic borders, interesting star designs, good charts

This book reverses the popular trend of bargello quilts. Instead, here are classic quilt patterns charted for needlepoint. The charts are large and easy to follow. The book has two glossy sections of color plates showing from 1 to 12 images per page. Most are 4 or 12 "quilt blocks" per page. If like me, you find that every bargello book basically has all the same patterns, just done in different colors, this is a great book. These are not normal bargello patterns. Because the patterns are based on quilt blocks that tend to have a lot of white background, you will find a need for a lot of background stitches. There is a section on borders and background stitches. The patterns are divided by subject matter with a lot of stars, broken stars, striped patterns, grid patterns, nautical patterns with fish, and a surprisingly large number of trees, plants, and flowers. I've done the braid border and want to try the intricate Monkey Wrench or one of the cool broken star patterns--LeMoyne or Bethlehem. The feathered star is very pretty too. I'm not a quilter, but even I recognize Double Wedding Ring, Log Cabin, and Fans. My color plates are coming out from too much handling, so be more careful than I was! A good addition to a needlepoint book collection. I only gave it a 4 not a 5 because nowadays we are used to more color images, and also I prefer to do bargello without a lot of boring background filling to do.
