In this in-depth exploration of the symbols found in Navaho legend and ritual, Gladys Reichard discusses the attitude of the tribe members toward their place in the universe, their obligation toward humankind and their gods, and their conception of the supernatural, as well as how the Navaho achieve a harmony within their world through symbolic ceremonial practice. A classic on Navajo religion

Gladys Reichard lived with Navajos for many years and was interested in weaving, then sandpaintings, then how Navajo religion worked, and where sandpaintings fit into the picture. She tries to clasify and group elements of the sandpaintings and show how they referred to Navajo precepts. She did a lot of work in this area, but could not contain it all.
