Contrived, confusing, & too long of a book with no satisfying explanations

My 1st Hiaasen book & a stand alone. Too many characters, too much Indian history that didn't need to be in the story, too many plot lines that weren't resolved by books end. Bits of the book were funny (such as the songs in Honey's head, Dealey's picture taking investigative skills, & Skinner's devotion to his ex-wife). The book dragged on with Tigertail's woes about being a half white indian, Boyd's incessant whining, Gillian's constant chatter, & the references about manic episodes & bi polar disorder to explain most of the plot action.

Hiaasen is magic!

Nobody makes playing with words so much fun as Hiaasen does. He's got the most bizarre imagination. The cast of characters is crazy, the stories, as usual, get all interconnected, and the result is a fun and satisfying ride. I found this book to be less philosophical and deep than some of his others. There wasn't an environmental "bad guy" out to destroy habitats to build a cheap housing development, though there definitely were a few bad guys who certainly didn't appreciate their surroundings. It was a lot more fun and quirky, and less of a morality tale. Definitely a must-read for fans of Hiaasen. And if you're up for a crazy ride that's part mystery, part satire, and pure comedy, give it a whirl. I actually bought Brideshead Revisited to reread after Hiaasen was compared to Waugh - another classic satirist worth reading.

Pretty much hits it on the head

Unlike most reviewers, I grew up not too far away from where the book takes place. Although the probability of this combination of personalities landing in the same location is remote, similiar circumstances have been known to occur in South Florida. His choice of characters may seem outlandish to people out of state, but not to us. I highly recommend the book, and am looking forward to his next.

Quirky, as always

The one thing you can always depend on from Carl Hiaasen is that the story will be quirky and interesting. This book is no exception and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Carl Hiaasen

I have read all of Hiaasens books including his young-reader Hoot and Flush and his non-humorous works like Trap Line, A Death In China and Powder Burn. Nature Girl is right at the top of his several crazy, offbeat and fun mystery novels set in Florida.

Hiaasen does it again

With usual sarcasm, Carl Hiaasen once again takes us to a siutuation in Florida, where the word common sence doesn't apply. Nature Girl has an exiting plot, a cast of loony characters and a bunch of humor. This time, we are given a view into the bizarre world of an telephone realestate caller, who makes his money through calling people during lunch time, trying to sell them something they don't need. - Does that sound familiar? - it does to Honey Santana, a middleaged divorced woman with a teenage son, who just about had it with that kind of people, and who is determined to set an example to a rude phoner from Texas, who as herrased her over the phone, calling her bad names. She lures him to Florida, to take him and his indifferent girlfriend on a kayak trip though the Thousand Island of the keys. Meet Honey, the Texans, a poor fisherman who gets his fingers cut of by crabs and afterwards gets them sewed back on - only in the wrong positions, a young Seminole indian who has difficuties adapting to the modern world and a wife who hires a PI to spy on her husband comitting adultry - she wants not only pictures from the PI but a video showing actual XXX penetration! Being an old fan of the author, I must say, I haven't had so much fun from a book since I read "The Double Whammy" and "Native Tongue". Hiaasen makes me wanna move from Denmark, where I live, to Florida to meet some of these incredible people - if they have any resemblence with reallife charaters!
