Studying nature can be as interesting as a treasure hunt, writes the author in the introduction to this fascinating book. Each month, each season has its own unique character. Visit the countryside, or your own backyard or park. Here are the facts you might want to know about everything you see. An inspiring guide for budding naturalists.
This isn't the Leslie book I had planned on buying originally, but I ended up giving it a chance and I'm glad I did. The book goes through each month of the year, spending 3-4 pages on each month and showing, in beautiful illustrations, what might be going on in the outdoor world around you. Starting in January with hibernating animals through the signs of spring, examining pond life and insects in summer and bird migration in fall--it covers animal and plant life in various habitats. Did I mention the beautiful pictures?
I am planning on using some of this book as teaching material, but it would be equally good on a young nature enthusiast's shelf or nightstand.

Month by month the Northeast US outdoor scene brings changes in the plants, animals, and climate. Opportunities for children to become involved in observation and simple projects are related to several attractively illustrated pages for each month. I've bought several copies of this book over the years, and am delighted it's back in print. Preschool and primary classrooms will find much to enjoy; youngsters refer over and over to favorite pages. It would make a nice present to a child's classroom; if there's already one there, so much the better!
