A simply excellent travel guide for America

Even with exorbitant fuel prices, America is still the best bargain for travel bargain. This book proves it, over and over. The photography is simply superb, all in color, and gives the reader a wonderful opportunity to anticipate what might be found along each route discussed. While certain routes, e.g., Woodward Avenue out of Detroit, going north, would not have made my list, this is a minor quibble, since the Guide is intended for folks who have NOT been on the highways discussed. The writing style is clear, informative, and easily read by anyone. The book is very well organized, and the remarkable photography closely follows the text. In short, whether you intend to visit one state, or several, this book is an absolute must in terms of planning your trip. It not only describes the routes themselves, but attractions that closely border them. I have probably traveled thirty or forty of the routes described. In almost every instance, after reading this book, I wish I had had it with me when I made the journey. This book earns a definite five-stars. It is very nearly a perfect travel guide to a lot of America. Even if your travels are confined to an armchair, you will enjoy this book endlessly for what it will teach you about America's geography and history. Highly recommended, but don't loan it out.

A durable guide - in more ways than one

I've been using this book to help me find and appreciate scenic drives for about 4 years now, and while a few items are starting to get dated, it's still amazingly useful. The heavy paper and solid binding has kept it from falling apart in spite of 4 years of being tossed around and spilled on and bent back. Also, the small size (this isn't an atlas) makes it easy to use in the car. I use the book to choose routes in advance, and when on the actual trip, always supplement it with local guides and maps. I've had good success with taking only parts of the drives, and even doing them in reverse! Highly recommended.

Places really worth seeing!

I've just been to USA, in honeymoon. I've found this guide really useful and interesting. If you are traveling by car in USA, this guide helps you to find wonderful places, out of the most crowded turistic routes! I've planned my journey day by day reading this book and I've been very satisfied!

Terrific compilation of places to go!

the book helped me pick some of the best routes i have driven on or visited otherwise in the states. lots of details and maps to help figure out things for yourself. definitely recommended for anyone planning to travel in the states and interested in nature.

Summer Drives of a Lifetime

Sunshine and longer days, and my mind wanders out to the open road. Every summer I plan a phantom route and mode of transportation. Right now I'm pretty keen on taking a VW Vanagon down the 101. Redwoods, North Beach, The Giant Dipper, Big Sur…fish tacos and saltwater taffy.
