Misleading

My opinion was the author, in an attempt to seek favor with the rabid, anti-war media of the era, embellished the stories he gathered from guys claiming to be Nam vets. Many were true I'm sure but it was a complete negative slant on how vicious the GIs were towards all Vietnamese, friend or foe. I've read no less than 150 books on the war and 99% of what I've read contradicts Mark Bakers narrative.

Great book from a 15 year old

Great book, my dad's friend gave it to me to read, i couldn`t put it down, and most the time i hate reading, but it read it very quickly, the fastest i have ever read a book, its so vivid, i can picture it, just the best book i have ever read!

THE ABSOLUTE BEST

I read this book about ten years ago. I bought a paperback in a drugstore and read it several times over before retiring it to the book shelf. I just researched it here to find out if it is still in print. Too bad that it's not. I WOULD recommend this book to anyone wanting to read about the REAL Vietnam. Well worth special ordering. This book is better than any movie or novel about Vietnam that I have ever read. It helped me have a better understanding of Vietnam Vets and what they endured. At nearly 30 years now since Vietnam, this book should be among the textbooks for US History. Lots of violence and adult language, but history is history. Report it like it was, then we can learn from our mistakes. GREAT BOOK!

Very Real details of soldiers lives in the Nam!

Its very well made, chapter 1 starts with how each soldier joined, to the final chapter when they came home, Not a book about the author, but the lives of many vets, and told word for word by the vets.

Great hisotical pictures of the era

Excellent pictoral of the Viet Nam era. Would especially like the author's email and a contact address for Rod Macon who is featured in the "special operations" section of this book for the purpose of research in the history of the War. and need Mr. Macon for a consultant.

A real pageturner

From the books I've read on Vietnam, this is second only to 'Dispatches' by Michael Herr. This book was one I could not put down. Really gives you a feel for what it was like to be there - because it's all told by those who were there. Some tragic parts, some amusing, definitely highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the subject
