Get rid of the kids, send your spouse away, buy your favourite snack food and settle down to read for the weekend! This book is a delight to read. I love books written from the end of a life where all the events can be woven together and the reall meaning and impact of events become obvious. Mystic Rose captures the life of a young woman growing up in Canada and wraps it in mystery. As you read, it all begins to piece together but with poetically written scenes and fragments of life. I can not believe this was written by a man...a MAN!! It is beautiful. If you have a Book Club - this is a perfect pick.
Great Read!

After reading Richard Scrimger's great children's books, as well as his non-fiction, Still Life with Children, which I also thoroughly enjoyed, I thought I would see what else he has. So I ordered Mystical Rose without knowing what it was about. This was a unique book--based on an elderly woman's conversation with God and herself. A dying woman, Rose reflects upon her life. As with a real person, her thoughts jump all over the place, from the past to the here and now. I was amazed that Richard Scrimger had no trouble writing from the inside of an elderly woman's mind, and making it utterly believable, at least from the point of view of a middle-aged woman reader. I know he is great with the kids' perspective, but then he has four children of his own. I can only guess that this guy is very intuitive. I met him once, really enjoyed that meeting, as well as the author reading that he gave. I can't say enough great things about this guy! I can only hope he writes more adult novels, as well as those for kids.
