When "wild" Paul Hodge returns from California, Saranne once again finds herself defending him, even as she faces problems of her own. This description may be from another edition of this product.
My favorite of all Johnston's 'Keeping Days' series is Saranne's story, which concludes in this book. I like how she blossoms and begins to see through her boyfriend's melodrama and staged tantrums. One of my favorite aspects of this book, however, is how Saranne's search for herself so completely captures my imagination -- I have yet to read it without continuing her story in my mind, watching her grow up and survive the war, becoming ever more herself.

Myself and I continues the story of Saranne Allbright, the heroine of Johnston's A Nice Girl Like You. Saranne is the niece of Tish Sterling, the narrator of Johnston's The Keeping Days series. In Myself and I, Saranne is again torn between her good-girl image and the demands of the rebellious Paul Hodge, whom she loves. As Saranne and Paul search for the truth about Paul's father, Saranne struggles with her own conscience. While Saranne loves Paul, she finds it harder to to remain loyal to him and be true to herself at the same time. And Saranne gets into difficulties when the people she comes up against in her search for the truth are the ones she loves most. While the story of a teenage rebel is an old one, Johnston's writing is impressive and thougtful and her characters are believeable and sympathetic. The portrait of New York City in the late 'teens is likewise fascinating, and with the charismatic Sterling clan on hand, Myself and I is a great addition to Johnston's novels.
