I have to disagree with the disappointed reviews

I will admit up front that this latest book by my favorite historical romance author is definitely unique compared to her previous works. But I didn't necessarily find that difference disappointing. The only difference that stood out to me as negative was that the book seemed shorter to me. It felt like there was not enough time for character and relationship development and thus they were both rushed through. Definitely not as luxurious and intricate as her early works. This is the first installment of a new triology of hers and, unlike all the other series, are interconnected not merely by shared bloodlines or characters, but also by an overall plot. I thought the concept was genius and a lot more realistic than sticking to the usual plug-n-chug formula of most romances. How is it that in every book the 'bad guy' is so easily defeated in the time it takes for the couple to meet, seduce, and marry? I enjoyed the cliff-hanger and I'm looking forward to the progression into the next book. And I expect the conclusion to be a fireworks show of comraderie, prose, and love.

MY WICKED MARQUESS by Gaelen Foley

I just finished reading MY WICKED MARQUESS and I thought it was a wonderful story. When I first started reading it I thought it was only a romance story but I was pleasantly surprised when I got into the book. Max and Daphne led very exciting lives and the way Gaelen described the time period I almost felt like I was there. I could even imagine the way they looked as they were dancing at the ball. I'm shocked at some of the low ratings that were given this book. Lorraine

Review by "The Reading Reviewer" Mary Gramlich

When you have been a spy and worked for a secret government agency for 20 years fighting a dangerous nemesis how do you retire and start a new life. Most likely in the same way you conducted your life in the secret service with precise order and logical thinking. Max St. Albans, Marquees of Rotherstone thinks finding a bride through logical deduction and careful calculations will bring about profitable results just like it had done for him in his life of service. But after he sees all five of the candidates his solicitor has found for him the one thing he never expected was unpredictable surprise with potential wife #5 - unexplained attraction. The Honorable Daphne Starling is not any of the things he sought for his new wife as she appears to be counter to his orderly thought but she does appear to be thing he hoped a wife would be - uninhibited in his bed. Daphne while being privileged by birth has tried to live life to the fullest and her goal of doing charitable works has not gone unnoticed. She works diligently for the orphanage in the dredges of London and when Max approaches her with his decision to marry she is not too keen on the idea. Daphne has a life, friends and obligations so she most assuredly does not need a husband trying to control her actions. But Max is relentless in his pursuit of her and decides to use the conformity of the time to his advantage and approaches her father to make the matter come to a quick conclusion. Daphne still runs but Max is most persistent in his pursuit and wins her heart and her hand in marriage. But when the secret society that Max worked for comes back calling for his service conflict arises for him all as he tries to balance his secret past with his secure present. Trying to maintain the lies and seclusion that is necessary for the job come at a price to his marriage and especially with a wife life Daphne who does not like any kind of secrecy. She forces the issue to the forefront and stands up to Max demanding answers and an introduction to the forces that still hold Max prisoner to his former life. But is Daphne up to the task of handling what dangers are lurking when she knows all of Max's secrets, can she be the dutiful wife and obey his wish for "The Inferno Club" to remain under the cover of darkness. The true test of both their marriage and conflict will be played out as this series progresses and all the cards are laid on the table. This book is a lovely affair of the heart and a thriller for the mind brought together in a fast-paced turn of events. You know from the start that Max and Daphne are a fait accompli but seeing the sparks fly on every page makes you still think that Daphne has a trick or two up her sleeve. But in the end after all the heated debates and confrontations Potential Wife #5 for Max becomes his #1 choice in his heart and binds her to his soul. Book 2 in the Inferno Club series, MY DANGEROUS DUKE, is tentatively scheduled for July 2010 Reviewed by Ma

Wish I could give it ten stars!

I have to say, this being the first novel I have ever read by this author, I was impressed. These characters are amazing! As for the supernatural stuff that offended some readers, I didn't see it that way at all, the 'Order' is more like a trained bunch of Regency James Bond's who kill for King and Country. I did hate the reference to one of their members being tortured, but at least it wasn't dwelled on in gory detail. The romance part was amazing. Max is one of the best heros I have read in years, and I read a lot of these books. Daphne had everything to make a wonderful heroine, guts, spunk, courage, and personal integrity. Can't wait for the next installment, and have already purchased some of her older books. Buy this book! You won't regret it!

Brilliant!

I came home from work with nothing to do and ended up picking up this book - after hours of reading (and some back pain from laying here for so long!) I just finished and had to tell someone about how great it was. Signed in to do a review and I'm shocked at the low star rating! Max and Daphne were awesome characters and I actually got a little teary eyed when they finally said I love you. The subplot (or I guess main plot for some reviewers - think Divinci Code meets Regency England) was of Max's position in the order and the things happening in that arena. Only at one point did I think hurry up and get back to Max and Daphne! (but in the authors defense it was a tense time in their relationship ;) and I wanted to know what was happening!). It is true that this ends abrubtly, for those interested purely in the romance story line, you'll be happy (but kept hanging on the subplot), and the possibilities in the subplot have me on the edge of my seat. Let me also say this...I love this genre, always have and I've been through hundreds upon hundreds of historical romances, but outside of a few exceptions any time I'd want something with a little bit more then your standard hero/heroine fall in love tale I'd have to go somewhere else, this book opens up options! I've always loved Gealen Foley, her books are great and this is no exception my only dissapointment is that I didn't stumble upon this two years from now - this way I can quickly pick up all the other books in the series... I hate waiting for the next one! I actually put off reading the Sookie Stackhouse books until a few weeks ago, they've been on my list for years, but I wanted them all at once! (And for those interested, well worth it! Devoured all 9 of those books in less then a couple weeks - I had to pace myself bc I didn't want it to end!) Anyways, this book really is great. Give it a shot!
