My name is Olena. I am a Ukrainian from Kharkiv - a city in the east, and one of many that was attacked by Russia in February 2022.
I am neither a writer nor a journalist, not a politician or a solider, not an active volunteer. I am just me. And nothing special happened to me. Like millions of my fellow citizens, I saw the war with my own eyes. I was right in the middle of it. Yet I got lucky, time and time again; this war was gentle to me, in a way it was not to others. There are thousands of people whose stories of the war are sadder, more tragic, more heart-breaking.
This is a book about how life looked for those who were 'lucky' in the war.
