Marshall Miles is one of the outstanding authors of bridge books. Anything he has written is well worth a read. During his career, Miles has played many systems varying from a very simple 4-card major/weak NT base through Blue Team Club with most stops along the way. Since he clearly is not overly wedded to any one approach, his thoughts on a system structure should be taken seriously, I think. His latest approach is something akin to Polish Club. Perhaps more important than the specifics of the system are his thoughts on WHY (all of his books are like this -- not merely instructions but the rationale behind them so the reader learns quite a bit even you he doesn't choose to use the recommended approach). There is enough detail of the mechanics so that you can actually play the system if you choose. Unlike the vast majority of system books, Miles does not shy away from discussing the weak points of the system (all systems involve trade-offs; Miles is willing to admit this). Have I changed to this system? No. It doesn't fit my style (when God is kind enough to deal me a 4-card spade suit, I want to open it The Unbalanced Diamond is a 5-card major system.) I have stolen a few ideas from the book and if I ever am forced to play a 5-cad major system, I would be happy to use this approach.
